BISWARUP CHATTOPADHYAY

Biswarup Chattopadhyay is the Artisan-in-Chief and Founder of Dum Dum Biswarupam, an independent theatre organisation founded on 21st February 2013 and officially registered as a Society on 13th September 2013. A passionate theatre practitioner, he is a Dramatist, Actor, Director and Theatre Researcher whose artistic journey has been deeply rooted in contemporary Bengali theatre and the traditions of Indian performance.

He studied in the Department of Drama, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, and completed his graduation in 2013. He completed his Master’s Degree in 2015, with a specialisation in Theatre & Videography. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Theatre from the Department of Drama, Rabindra Bharati University. His doctoral research focuses on “ব্রাত্য বসুর আড়াই দশকের (১৯৯৫–২০২০) নাট্যযাপন ও সমকালীন বাংলা থিয়েটার” (Bratya Basur Arhai Dashaker (1995–2020) Natyajapan o Samakalin Bangla Theatre), exploring the artistic journey of Bratya Basu over two and a half decades and its relationship with contemporary Bengali theatre.

Over the years, Biswarup Chattopadhyay has received numerous national and international awards and recognitions for his contribution to theatre and cultural practice. He received the UNIFEST Best Mimicry Artist Award (East Zone) in 2010 and the UNIFEST Best Director Award in 2011. In 2012, he was honoured with the Indo-Bhutan Cultural Award by Paro University, Bhutan. In 2018, he received the Best Spokesman Award from Dum Dum Assembly for his presentation on “Swadhinata, Bangla & Mamata Bandyopadhyay.” His international recognition continued with the Chandrakala Padak, conferred by Chandrakala Theatre, Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2023, followed by the India–Sri Lanka Cultural Bridging Award from Plato Academy, Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 2024. In 2026, he was again honoured by Plato Academy, Colombo, Sri Lanka, for the remarkable production “PANCHAM,” based on the Natya Shastra of Bharat.

As the Artisan-in-Chief of Dum Dum Biswarupam, Biswarup Chattopadhyay has been involved in the creation, direction and artistic development of theatre productions that seek to connect the rich heritage of Indian theatre with contemporary theatrical expression. His work reflects a continuous engagement with performance, dramaturgy, theatre research and intercultural artistic exchange.

A significant milestone in his artistic career came with the Bengali production “CHARANDAS,” which, under his artistic leadership as Artisan-in-Chief, was selected to perform at Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2025 in Bhopal. The production was presented by invitation of the National School of Drama (NSD), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, marking an important recognition of his organisation’s contribution to the Indian theatre movement.

Through his artistic journey and the continuing work of Dum Dum Biswarupam, Biswarup Chattopadhyay remains committed to creating meaningful theatre that brings together tradition and contemporaneity, research and performance, and regional artistic identity with national and international cultural exchange.
